Twice as Nice Comedy 30 March @ Grove Hammersmith: Jarleth Regan & Steve Hall Previews

Image

Jarlath Regan is a 31 year old Irish comedian. After winning a place in the final of the BBC and Channel 4 new comedy awards he began gigging around Ireland in small bars, pubs, community halls and hay barns. After a while he was asked to support people like Ardal O’Hanlon and David O’Doherty. Not emotionally but by doing a short set before they went on stage. In the past few years he has appeared on Ireland’s version of Mock The Week – The Panel. He recently completed his second illustrated book of his twisted greeting card collection which was published by Transworld Ireland for Random House in April 2011. The first book, “How To Break Bad News” became an instand best-seller and something of a cult classic. In January 2009 he made a little bit of history by becoming the first comedian to record a live album in Dublin’s Comedy Cellar – the venue that gave birth to Dara O’Brian, Tommy Tiernan and Dylan Moran. “The man radiates warmth while projecting deliciously dark greeting cards which are thoroughly recommended for Christmas or hostage situations” The Scotsman “Side-splitting stuff…causes near hysteria in the room” Metro ****

Steve Hall has provided the support for Russell Howard on his sell-out national tours Adventures, Dingledodies and the 2009 arena tour Big Rooms And Belly Laughs. Steve’s recent work has included writing on Russell Howard’s Good News series 6, 7 and 8 as well as a second series of writing for BBC Radio 4’s The Now Show. A finalist in the BBC New Comedy Award and Daily Telegraph Open Mic Award. Steve Hall also makes up one third of if.comedy Award nominated and BBC Three sketch show We Are Klang. The group has appeared on the Paramount Comedy Channel’s Edinburgh & Beyond two years running and was nominated in 2006 for the Chortle Best Sketch Show, which they then won in 2007. “This is stand-up as it should be: snappy and smart, occasionally nasty, and always funny” The List

Twice as Nice Comedy @ Barnes OSO 20th March: Mike Wozniak & Sofie Hagen

Old Sorting Office, 49 Station Road, Barnes Green, SW13 0LF

mike_wozniak

Mike Wozniak has more show business in his moustache than he does in his little finger. Where do you keep yours? Let’s find out if we get around to it. ‘Just could be the new comedy hero.’ Time Out wrote that ages ago. ‘Completely hilarious, highly recommended’ (3 News – they are real and based in New Zealand). Wozniak has a total of 43 stars from an undisclosed number of reviews.

Sofie Hagen

Sofie Hagen is a Multi-award-winning, dark and Danish she is well worth looking out for. In 2012 Sofie was chosen to perform at the prestigious Danish Comedy Gala 2012 as ‘The New Hope of Comedy’ and shortly thereafter moved to London, where she became runner up in at the Leicester Square New Comedian of the Year competition. TimeOut declared Hagen ‘ONE TO WATCH’ as she won Laughing Horse New Act of the Year 2013, establishing her as a comedian who is “destined to make a name for herself” (Chortle.co.uk).“Hagen’s act sharply pokes fun at British words and phrases and she’s not afraid switch to bleaker, more contentious subject matter.” – TimeOut.co.uk

Twice as Nice Comedy @ Grove Hammersmith Sunday 16 March: Al Lubel & Nish Kumar

Image

Al Lubel

Al Lubel became a lawyer to please his mother and a comedian to please himself (which did not please his mother). After graduating from law school in Florida, Al moved to Los Angeles, passed the California Bar Exam on his first try and wouldn’t you know it, immediately began the practice of stand-up comedy. Al quit the law. This was a good decision, because within a year he won the $100,000 Grand Prize for comedy on Star Search. Doing the “The Tonight Show” was a childhood fantasy, so when Al heard that Johnny Carson was retiring, he auditioned and became one of the last comics to appear with Johnny. More recently, Al just made his fifth appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman. Even though comedy is his first love, Al admits to missing the practice of law. “I’d like to have one more trial, something serious like a murder trial because as my client’s fate hangs in the balance I’d like to see his reaction when I whisper in his ear…I’m a comedian!”

‘ A terrifically funny comedian’ David Letterman

Image
Nish Kumar

‘Massively charming and very witty … a delightful talent’ Time Out

‘Impressive and accomplished….full of confidently delivered, wryly witty tales that delight in the quirks and possibilities of language.’ ★★★★ Scotsman

‘A warm, likable presence, always bubbling with ideas and an inescapable urge to communicate them…. Kumar picks out his own weaknesses and holds them up to highly entertaining public ridicule.’ Guardian

‘What an assured debut this is from Nish Kumar. A calling card which proves beyond doubt that he is already a skilled comic, preloaded with an hour of polished, gimmick-free stand-up guaranteed to do the job.’ Chortle

One of Dave’s Top Ten jokes of the Fringe 2012.
